Grandmaster
wannabe

I work at Valiton in Munich, on recommendation systems, information extraction pipelines, and agentic applications, as well as the infrastructure that supports them.

I came to data science through data engineering. So I have always seen the work that comes before modeling as the foundation. Defining the problem, preparing the data, and building the systems around it is most of the job, and it's the part that decides whether a model is useful.

Beyond work

  • Photography: architecture, quiet street scenes, and the small compositional details that are easy to miss (still developing my eye for spontaneous street photography)
  • Playing chess, with more enthusiasm than accuracy
  • Baking desserts that occasionally justify the effort
  • Collecting typefaces, despite having no defensible need for so many
  • Music, and a saxophone I play less often than I should
  • Fine dining, where I am a little too willing to spend time and money
  • Playing every game FromSoftware puts out
